万建民,教授,博士生导师,水稻分子遗传与育种专家。1982年获南京农业大学农学专业学士学位,1985年获南京农业大学作物遗传育种硕士学位,1995年获日本京都大学农学博士学位。1996年任日本京都大学农学部特别研究员,1997.1-2001.1年任日本农林水产省农业研究中心研究员。1999年3月被教育部聘为首批“长江学者奖励计划”特聘教授,2000年回国,任南京农业大学农学院教授、博士生导师、农学院院长。2003年7月至今,担任中国农业科学院作物科学研究所所长。2004年起,兼任中国作物学会常务副理事长、中国农业生物技术学会副理事长、国家转基因生物新品种培育科技重大专项技术总师、国家发改委生物技术产业咨询委员会副秘书长、国家“863”计划“作物分子育种”项目负责人。2015年当选中国工程院院士。

万建民长期从事水稻优异基因挖掘和分子育种研究,在国内较早提出和初步实践了作物分子设计育种。先后主持国家863计划、国家自然科学基金、农业部超级稻专项和国际合作项目等多项重大课题,组织和协调全国南方粳稻的分子育种工作。带领团队建立了相关研究体系,在水稻籼粳交杂种优势利用基础研究(包括杂种不育、超亲晚熟、株高超亲)、品质优异基因挖掘(外观品质垩白和粒型、食味品质淀粉和蛋白、以及功能性品质等)、抗病虫新基因挖掘(褐飞虱、灰飞虱、条纹叶枯病、黑条矮缩病)和优质高产多抗粳稻新品种选育等方面取得了重要进展,在国内较早提出和实践作物分子设计育种,构建了水稻分子育种技术体系。已图位克隆水稻重要新基因25个,培育新品种8个,其中宁粳1号、宁粳3号、宁粳4号三个品种被农业部确认为超级稻品种,得到大面积的推广应用。获得新品种权15项、发明专利20项。在Nature、Nature Biotechnology、Nature Communications、Developmental Cell、PNAS、Plant Cell、PLOS Genetics、Plant J.、Plant Physiology等SCI刊物发表论文150余篇,出版专著3部。培养的博士生有3人获全国优秀博士学位论文提名奖。
研究成果“抗条纹叶枯病高产优质粳稻新品种选育及应用” 2010年获国家科技进步一等奖(第一完成人),另外,获省部级一等奖3项,二等奖3项。被授予全国优秀农业科技工作者、农业部及江苏省有突出贡献中青年专家和江苏省“五一”劳动奖章等荣誉称号。2006年入选新世纪百千万人才工程国家级人选,2012年入选国家万人计划和科技部创新团队,2012年获得何梁何利基金科学与技术进步奖。2013年,万建民教授课题组科研人员在控制水稻分蘖的新激素信号转导研究中取得了开创性进展,12月11日在线出版的国际顶级杂志——《自然》以Article Research形式刊登了相关研究成果。
